Burt Baskin

Burt "Butch" Baskin (19131969) founded the Baskin-Robbins ice cream parlor chain in 1946 with his partner and brother-in-law Irv Robbins. He was born in Streator, Illinois, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Harry Baskin. Baskin attended the University of Illinois at Evanston and received a Bachelor of Arts degree, where he was a member of the Jewish fraternity Zeta Beta Tau.

Burt and Irv first met in 1941 when Burt began courting Irv’s sister Shirley Robbins, whom he married in 1942. They had two children: Edie (born in 1945) and Richard (born in 1948). Burt served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy in the South Pacific during WWII. In early 1946, Burt opened Burton’s (561 South Lake, Pasadena). By this time Irv had three Snowbird stores.
