Burslem School of Art

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Burslem School of Art is located in Burslem in the Potteries district of England. Traces of ceramics work can be found on the site of the school dating back to the Middle Ages. However, the art school originated in the nineteenth century when each of the towns making up the (future) city of Stoke-on-Trent had its own art school. From the early twentieth century Burslem School of Art had the best building (designed by Wood, a local architect) and the School became pre-eminent in the district. Artists who trained at the school include: Clarice Cliff, Charles Tomlinson, Sidney Tushingham, Susie Cooper, and William Bowyer. Among those who taught at the School were Arnold Machin and Arthur Berry.
