"Burning the Books" is an episode of the long-running British police drama The Bill, broadcast on the ITV Network. This is the ninth episode of the first series.

Eager to catch an illegal magazine importer, DI Galloway faces all sorts of troubles, from the factory where all the evidence was being kept 'mysteriously' burning down, to having to trade in his old car, right through to the hidden stash of books he's searching for being hidden in the most unlikely place in East London ...

  • The Bill creator Geoff McQueen later stated that one of his series strengths was the fact that "we never show the criminals devising their plan without a police officer being present in the scene". However, there are in fact several times in the first series when this is not the case. "Burning the Books" is one such occasion, where we join the action considerably before any of the Sun Hill officers make an appearance, and we continually cut back to the criminals point-of-view throughout. It works well within the context of this episode though, as part of the fun is that the bad-guys are always one step ahead of Galloping Galloway ...
