Burji special woreda

Burji is one of the 79 woredas in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region (SNNPR) of Ethiopia. Because Burji is not part of any Zone in the SNNPR, it is considered a Special woreda. It is named for the Burji people, who have their homeland in this woreda.

Burji is bordered on the east and south by the Oromia Region, on the west by the Konso Special Woreda, and on the north by the Amaro Special Woreda. The major town in Burji is Soyama.

Based on figures from the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 56,371, of whom 27,956 were males and 28,415 were females; 8,052 or 14.3% of its population are urban dwellers. With an estimated area of 1,319.85 square kilometers, Burji has a population density of 42.71 people per square kilometer.[1]
