Burgon Society
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- The Dean Burgon Society is a King James Only advocacy organization, and should not be confused with the academic Burgon Society. They are separate organizations.
The Burgon Society was founded in 2000 for the study and promotion of academical dress, to preserve its history, and to advise film and television companies and interested others in the correct usage of academical dress.
The society is named after the man known as Dean Burgon, John William Burgon (1813-1888). He is the only person to have an academic hood named after him, the Burgon hood.
The patrons of the society are
- The Rt Revd & Rt Hon. Richard J. C. Chartres, MA (Cantab), BD (Lambeth), DLitt (Guildhall), DD (London), DD (City), DD (Brunel), FSA, FBS, Bishop of London
- James P. S. Thomson, MS (London), DM (Lambeth), FRCS, FBS, Master of London Charterhouse
- Dr. G.W. Shaw, Author and Learned Scholar, until his death in 2006.
Membership of The Burgon Society is open to all who support the aims of the society. Fellowship (FBS) may be awarded to members upon supplication after submission of substantial work on the study of academical dress.
