Burgh Le Marsh
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Burgh le Marsh is a town to the west of Skegness in East Lindsey. on the Lincoln-Skegness A158. It has many services including a traditional butcher, baker and convenience shops. There are also several pubs, an estate agent and hairdresser as well as a market. The population is 2,016.
The town is built on a large hill surrounded by former marsh land, (which was latter drained), hence the name Burgh Le Marsh. Since 1988 it has been twinned with Beaumont sur Sarthe in the Pays de la Loire in France. The town has a windmill and church which are visible from far around. A bypass which will cut traffic dramatically in the town is now being constructed with plans for the bypass to be finished in 2007/8. Local pubs include the Fleece Inn in the Market Square; the Bell Hotel, White Hart Hotel, White Swan, and Ye Olde Burgh Inn on the High Street; and the Ye Olde Red Lion on Storeys Lane. The parish church is St Peter and St Paul.
[edit] Saxon Burial Mound
Near the parish church is a large mound, where Saxon burial remains were found during the 1930s. The mound was later used for cock fighting and so is named Cock Hill.
[edit] Windmills
The town hosts two windmills, Hanson's Mill and Dobson's Mill, the latter of which is run as a museum. Built in 1813 by Sam Oxley (who also built Alford Windmill a sister mill in the near by town of Alford, Lincolnshire) it is unusual in being a left handed mill and having five sales.
