[edit] Eno Pic

Why'd you remove the eno pic? I scanned it mysel from the album sleeve and seen pictures like this before on wikipedia go unremoved. Why is it any different for this one?  :/ Andrzejbanas 20:14, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sharpie

Do you really feel that it is valuable to note that Sharpies are available in Fine, Extra Fine, Ultra Fine, Super, Twin, Super Twin, Chisel, Metallic, Grip, Industrial, and Professional tips, and in Yellow, Black, Blue, Green, Orange, Red, Brown, Purple, Turquoise, Lime, Aqua, Berry, Olive, Marigold, Navy, Plum, Burgundy, and Silver ink? This strikes me as verging on silly. I won't delete valid information, but I have to ask why you thought it was worthwhile to include it. Dpbsmith 23:42, 9 May 2004 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for vastly improving the Sharpie article and the image. I took the Sharpie photo but forgot to add the GFDL notice. I modified Image:Sharpie.png accordingly. - Ivan 22:38, May 10, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use screen shots

I see you've added the famous "moon behind skyscraper" image to Koyaanisqatsi. It's very nice, but you probably should check out Wikipedia:Fair use, which describes the steps you need to go through to use fair use images in Wikipedia. One of those is establishing a rationale for the use, which I didn't see at Image:Koyaanisqatsi Moon Frame.jpg. Thanks in advance! -- hike395 02:11, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I don't know much about copyright, so I can't help you with specifics, I'm afraid. The information at Image description page#Fair use rationale has a link to a Purdue article about how to create rationales for fair use. Hope this helps. -- hike395 05:29, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy tags on songs

Please do not put speedy delete tags on short articles about songs by famous bands. Take them to votes for deletion if you wish. Kappa

[edit] Moving pages

You don't need to manually edit redirects after you've moved them. I think you'll find that redirects are created automatically.

In any case, doing so is counterproductive, because if someone wants to move a page back to its title, if the original page has more than just one edit, the move will fail. Thanks and HTH Dysprosia 06:26, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Alright, I'll remember not to change them manually. Thanks for the tip. Bungopolis 06:27, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Amoeba Music

Hi Al. I noticed your deletion request for Commons:Image:Amoeba Music San Francisco Exterior.jpg. I left a comment at Commons:Commons:Deletion requests#Image:Amoeba_Music_San_Francisco_Exterior.jpg. In my opinion, the right thing to do would have been to simply upload the darkened version of the photo over the washed-out version. See Commons:Image:Pretzel.jpg for an example. Hi Bungopolis, a new mailing list has been set up to distribute news about the Wikimedia foundation, specifically at the moment to publicise Quarto. I saw your name on the quarto talk page requesting a copy by email, and I think this mailing list is how we're going to do it for the moment. It'll be a html email, which I've added to the Quarto talk page m:Talk:WQ. Mailing list is called Foundation-news-l (We also need translators!) Cheers w:User:Cormaggio

[edit] response

I got a lot of that Jason Webley stuff not from springman but from Jason himself. He wrote the bio for his press packet. He is a friend of mine, and weird guy at that, and has no problem writing in the third person. I had no idea that what was buried in the bowels of Jason's site was also on the springman site. Although Avi, the owner of springman records and a friend of my fiance, may have copywrighted material markings on the webley page at the springman site, springman people did not write it.

[edit] List of 2001: A Space Odyssey trivia

I have started editing List of 2001: A Space Odyssey trivia while you was in the middle of cleaning it up. It is newly created, and has gone through a major re-organization. I would rather let you finish what you started (beating me to it -- wink) before I start making further changes. Thanks

Just please don't delete the TZ pic. I consider it to pertinent to the trivia referncing it. -- Jason Palpatine 19:39, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

BTW -- you should not reduce the hotel room pic to the same size px as the TZ pic. The system size is set to width. Thus, the 2 pictures are actually not being set to the same size. That's why I had the hotel room pic set to a larger px, because I wanted them to be the size -- i.e. height. Jason Palpatine 19:49, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] TMA-1

YYou wrote that:

I noticed that somebody linked the lunar monolith to Tycho Magnetic Anomaly TMA-1. Is this name mentioned in the film at all? --Bungopolis 09:18, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

That's a good question. I put the link in while expanding the TMA-1 article itself. I remember the name from the book, rather than the movie; I had thought it occurred in the movie as well, but honestly can't remember. There are a couple of early versions of the screenplay floating around on the net, that refer to TMA-1 in the scene names/descriptions, but not the actual dialogue. Thoughts? It's easy enough to unlink if it's inappropriate - or could mention in the TMA-1 article that that name is only used in the book. Before I changed the TMA-1 article, it only mentioned the movie, not the book. Paddles TC 13:47, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
Not mentioned -- shown. Remember, with a single exception, Kubrick deliberatly ommitted the use of direct dialouge in the movie. He presented everything he could visually. In scene after scene, characters talked around what was happening. On the journey in the sub-orbital shuttle, Halvorsen and Michaels showed Floyd a stack of diagrams, maps, and photographs indicating the discovery of an anomaly in the moon's magnetic field in Tycho crater, dubbed TMA-1 (Tycho Magnetic Anomaly #1). There was an image I included in the article that showed a closeup of the file Floyd was reading Image:2001TMA1printout.jpg that displayed the anagram. The image was to establish TMA-1 to the audience. But somebody decided that...
"There is no such thing as too little when it comes to fair use. That is all. "
..and proceded to delete it and a number of the other images I and another admin had left in the article -- butchering it. Your comment here demonstrates the point I have been repeating over and over to the brickwalls here: 2001 is primarily a visual experience; to not use multiple pictures, IMHO, leaves the article in a banal half-state. It was on account of the visual nature of the work that I incorperated more than the usual number of images. I have tried to be accomidationg, but it seems to mean nothing and my discussions fall on deaf ears. How many other people disapprove of the article as it now stands? Ok, some of the prose may need touching up -- I am not a professional writer!" -- User:Jason Palpatine speak your mind

[edit] Image of starchild with Arthur C. Clarke quote

I am removing the quote "There before him, a glittering toy no Star-Child could resist, floated the planet Earth with all its peoples." from the caption for the image of the starchild under Synopsis as it is from the novel and not the film, so I don't think it belongs in this article at all. -Bungopolis 19:56, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

I've had this discussion with others. The book and the film are reflections of each other. In fact, an entire chapter from the book is included in the film souviner program. I belive the qoute pertinent and appropiate.

I will await your reply

[edit] Citation

You requested ref citation of the Filmed but unused scenes section of 2001: A Space Odyssey (film). I attempted to insert references as you requested, but something went wrong. After the first paragraph, the rest of the article is blanked out -- still there but doesn't show.

HELP!

I've been telling you guys for months: I do not understand how to properly insert inline references into an article. The instructions read like a COBOL manual. I did more harm than good. Sorry. -- Jason Palpatine 13:58, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

PS -- An additional reference about the destruction of the 2001 sets is in the STARLOG magazine coverage of the making of 2010. Hyams had to use the final prisine cut of 2001 as a reference to reconstuct the sets and props -- with only fair results.

[edit] 2001: Are the Satellites Weapons?

Hello, SailorLula here. I'm the guy who added the "satellites are weapons" note to the 2001 entry that you deleted. I would respectfully like to argue that you can clearly discern, strictly from viewing the film alone, that they are indeed weapons.

Let's remember first that almost all the important messages of 2001 are conveyed in a less-than-explicit visual manner and are only communicated once the viewer "connects the dots" and draws a conclusion. E.g., perhaps the most important example all, that the Monolith has educated the man-ape. We know this only by drawing conclusions from the visual and audio material presented. Man-ape touches Monolith, man-ape picks up bone, quick-cut to Monolith and back once more, accompanied by Thus Spake Tharathustra swelling, and suddenly man-ape knows about tools/weapons. The logical conclusion to draw, upon which virtually everyone agrees, is that the Monolith taught man-ape about tools/weapons.

I argue that it's equally clear that the orbiting satellites are weapons. I list reasons in descending order of 'strength:'

1) The edit cut from bone/weapon to satellite. With this sharp weapon-to-satellite visual transition alone, Kubrick is practically handing us on a plate the "satellite=weapon" interpretation.

2) If you view the movie on the big screen (NOT on TV at home), you can discern the liveries of different countries on the different satellites in orbit. If memory serves me -- (I wish it was playing in Cinerama somewhere so I could confirm!) -- I believe you can make out (at the very least) CCCP (USSR), China and Germany. Curiously, all presumably nuclear powers around the year 2001. On TV at home all I can make out is a red blur on one satellite (USSR or China) and what looks like the German flag on another. Perhaps an HDTV-DVD release will allow us to examine this footage more closely.

3) The shape of the satellites in the eyes of a 1968 audience. 1968 viewers were generally familiar only with ball-shaped satellites such as Sputnik and Telstar. The 2001 satellites were all barrel-shaped (some might even call them gun-shaped) with the barrels all seemingly pointed at Earth. For 21st-Century viewers used to seeing barrel-shaped satellites such as Hubble, this jarring-to-1968-viewers detail is easy to miss.

4) Kubrick clearly has violence on the brain. Just before seeing the satellites we witness the man-ape violence. Later, while Heywood Floyd sleeps on his way to the space station, his video screen depicts some sort of battle between futuristic-looking tanks. On the way to the Moon, the stewardesses watch a karate battle while sipping their meals. And then there's that little matter with HAL.

5) This is reaching a bit, but the satellites, as contrasted with the space station, are clearly in a lower Earth orbit as would be consistent with optimal placement of space weapons targeting Earth.

I argue that these details leave the astute viewer with little doubt that Kubrick intended to visually convey that the satellites are indeed weapons.

Documentation, OUTSIDE of the film footage itself, that supports my argument includes the original 2001 script,

http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/2001.html

which explicitly states that the satellites are thousand-megaton nuclear bombs, and display the insignia of Russia/CCCP, America, France, Germany and China.

[edit] Interrobamf / Proposed Deletion of 2001 Trivia:

Adding this identical message to Jason Palpatine and Bungopolis' User talk:

Hi guys -- what do we do to get this Interrobamf guy off our backs WRT futzing with the 2001 film entry, and, more importantly, attempting to have the triva list deleted? If you look at his user talk, you'll see he's been written up bunch of times already for being a major asshole.

(Jason, do you want to add your voice/vote to keep the trivia page at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of 2001: A Space Odyssey trivia? )

Since Wiki discourages trivia articles, do we "de-trivialize" the article and/or roll its content back into the main film article?

P.S. is there any efficient way to talk here as a group without having to post to multiple user talk pages?

[edit] Image:Hancock300.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Hancock300.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ShadowHalo 05:02, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Alan Parker.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not.
