Bunbury, Cheshire

Bunbury is a village in the county of Cheshire, England, south of Tarporley, north west of Nantwich, and on the Shropshire Union Canal.
Bunbury Locks is a working wharf with some high-rise locks and canal horse stables.
Bunbury Mill is a watermill from the 1840s although there has been a watermill on this site for about 700 years. The present one was destroyed in 1968, but has been restored.
The main lane in Bunbury is called "Bunbury Lane" which contains "a selection" of (3 small) shops and 3 pubs. Bunbury Aldersey C of E Primary school is found in "School Lane". Bunbury's parish church is dedicated to Saint Boniface and is built on the highest point of the village. It is over one thousand years old and is built on an older pagan site.
Bunbury boasts "many" amenities such as a cricket pavilion, sports pitches, tennis courts, three pubs and a village hall and has some clubs and societies.
Bunbury is famous for being the name of the imaginary friend of Algenon in Oscar Wilde's Importance of Being Earnest. Algenon uses the excuse of visiting his friend Bunbury to get out of his awful aunt's formal functions. Hence a "Bunburyist" is a person conducting a double deceptive life, pretending to be somebody else. "To Bunbury all over" means to mess around; to travel around to have fun; to entertain oneself.
Some prominent gentlemen of the county of Cheshire met in Bunbury on December 23, 1642 and drew up the Bunbury Agreement. The terms of the agreement were intended to keep Cheshire neutral during the English Civil War. It proved to be a forlon hope, because of the national strategic importance of Cheshire and of the city port of Chester meant that national interests overruled local ones.
Bunbury is also the birth place of the famous nineteenth century poet and witter Robert Jones III.
Cholmondeley, a nearby village is also picturesque-beautiful.
