Bun Boy is the name of a small American restaurant business, established in 1926 in the Mojave Desert area of California. Famous for its fresh strawberry pie, Bun Boy has locations in Barstow and Baker. Both are easily accessible from Interstate 15 (which replaced U.S. Highways 91, 66 and 466), the main thoroughfare through the desert between Southern California and Las Vegas. The more notable of the two is the original Baker location situated just off Interstate 15 along a segment of the decommissioned Highway 91. Baker is a popular interlude not only for Las Vegas-bound travelers, but for motorists headed north to Death Valley via California State Highway 127.

[edit] Baker

The Baker complex included a 24-hour restaurant, country store, motel, restrooms and, at 134 feet (41 meters), the world's tallest thermometer. The digital thermometer's height in feet corresponds to the highest temperature reading ever recorded in the United States: 134°F/56.6°C on July 10, 1913, in nearby Death Valley. As one of the few rest stops for those traveling through the desert, Bun Boy is heavily advertised on billboards along Interstate 15. The country store holds the distinction of producing more "instant millionaires" in the "California Super Lotto" than any other single location in the state[citation needed], prompting long lines when the lottery jackpot reaches well into the millions of dollars.

As of 2006 the Bun Boy in Baker is now a Bob's Big Boy. The Bun Boy Motel is still operating next door, however.
