Template talk:Bumps chart

This is still very much under construction. Richard B 19:51, 11 November 2005 (UTC)
The aim is to use the template for producing bumps charts. These are a convenient way of displaying the results of a set of bumps races. Initially, it can be used primarily for the Lent Bumps, May Bumps at Cambridge University and the Summer Eights at Oxford University (although it's currently set up for a division of 17 boats, which is currently the norm in the Cambridge system), as the necessary symbols are loaded on Commons, but it can be expanded to include other symbols in the future, which would permit its use with Torpids and other bumps races with similar rules. As of now (14th November 2005), it can only represent some of the possible movements at the intechange of two divisions.

[edit] Format and Symbols currently available
The chart is divided into squares. A week's chart is 4 squares wide, with each square's width representing a single day's racing.
[edit] Symbols for the middle of a division, top of 1st division, or bottom of last division
r01 - Represents a row-over - a crew which did not bump or get bumped in the course of the day's racing.
b01 - Represents the top half of a bump.
b02 - Represents the bottom half of a bump. Must go directly below a b01 symbol, or a b06 symbol if in the 2nd row of a bumps chart not in the 1st division.
o01 - Represents the top quarter of an overbump.
o02 - Represents the 2nd quarter of an overbump. Must go directly below an o01 symbol.
o03 - Represents the 3rd quarter of an overbump. Must go directly below an o02 symbol.
o04 - Represents the 4th quarter of an overbump. Must go directly below an o03 symbol.
n01 - Represents a situation where no result is given, e.g. for the last 2 days of the Lent Bumps 2001
[edit] Symbols for the top and bottom of a division (except the top of division 1)
r02 - Represents a row-over at the bottom of a division. Can only go in the bottom row of a bumps chart.
r03 - Represents a row-over at the top of a division. Can only go in the top row of a bumps chart. Use r01 for this situation in the first division.
b03 - Represents the bottom crew of a division bumped by the top crew of previous division. Can only go in the bottom row of a bumps chart.
b04 - Represents the top crew of a division bumping the bottom crew of next division. Must go immediately below a b03 symbol and at the top row of a bumps chart.
b05 - Represents the bottom crew of a division bumping the penultimate crew of the same division. Must go below a b01 symbol and in the bottom row of a bumps chart.
b06 - Represents the top crew of a division being bumped by the 2nd crew of the same division, but failing to bump into the next division. Must go above a b02 symbol and be in the top row of a bumps chart. Use b01 for this situation in the first division.
b07 - Represents the top third of a situation where the 2nd crew of a division bumps the top crew of a division, then bumps the bottom crew of the next division as sandwich boat. Must go in the bottom row of a bumps chart.
b08 - Represents the middle third of a situation where the 2nd crew of a division bumps the top crew of a division, then bumps the bottom crew of the next division as sandwich boat. Must go in the top row of a bumps chart, immediately underneath a b07 symbol.
b09 - Represents the bottom third of a situation where the 2nd crew of a division bumps the top crew of a division, then bumps the bottom crew of the next division as sandwich boat. Must go in the 2nd row of a bumps chart, immediately underneath a b08 symbol.
n02 - Represents a situation where no result is given (e.g. if races are cancelled or if the result has not yet happened) - at bottom of division.
n03 - Represents the corresponding situation to n02 at the top of a division.
[edit] Planned/needed symbols
1. more symbols at the bottom or top of a division, such as those for overbumps.
2. ones which can display double overbumps (movements up or down 5 places), or perhaps higher order overbumps.
3. ones which can display the wide variety of possible movements in the Torpids system.
[edit] Example
This is the bumps chart for the women's 1st division of the May Bumps 2003, chosen because it includes most of the common symbols (overbumps are relatively rare in the 1st divisions).
{{Bumps chart| = |b01|r01|b01|r01| = |b02|b01|b02|r01| = |b01|b02|b01|r01| = |b02|b01|b02|r01| = |b01|b02|b01|r01| = |b02|r01|b02|b01| = |r01|b01|r01|b02| = |b01|b02|b01|r01| = |b02|r01|b02|o01| = |r01|r01|r01|o02| = |b01|r01|b01|o03| = |b02|b01|b02|o04| = |r01|b02|r01|b01| = |r01|r01|b01|b02| = |b01|r01|b02|r01| = |b02|b01|r01|r01| = |b03|b05|b03|r02| = |28}}
