The Bulgaria national volleyball team, controlled by the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation, is one of the leading volleyball teams in Europe and the world.

Its achievements include one silver medal from the World Championship (1970) and four bronze medals (1949, 1952, 1986, 2006), as well as one fourth place (1962). From the European Championship, Bulgaria has won one second place (1951) and three third (1955, 1981 and 1983) and four fourth places (1948, 1963, 1967 and 1995). Bulgaria has also won a silver medal from the 1980 Summer Olympic Games in Moscow, and has a fourth place from the 1972 Olympics in Munich. The team's World Cup tally is one fourth place in 1969, and other achievements are the three World League fourth places (1994, 2004 and 2006).[1]

Bulgaria also participated in the 2006 Volleyball World Championship, where the team started with two wins (3–2 over Italy[2] and 3–0 over the United States)[3] in Pool C, and then defeated the successful Venezuelan team 3–1 to take the lead in the group.[4] Bulgaria later solidified their head position with an uncompromising 3–0 over Iran.[5] A 3–1 victory over the Czech Republic meant Bulgaria was qualifying for the next stage with five wins from five games.[6]

Beginning the second round in Pool F in the top position with six points (from three wins over teams which qualified for the second round), Bulgaria also beat Cuba 3–0 in their first second round game on 25 November 2006.[7] A 3–1 win over Germany followed, with the Bulgarian team keeping the first position in the pool.[8] A dramatic comeback for 2–3 over France gave Bulgaria their eight consecutive victory in the championship, effectively earning a place in the semi-finals (first in 20 years for a World Championship) and securing a top four finish.[9]

After taking some rest against Brazil (1–3), fielding mostly reserve players, Bulgaria faced Poland in the semi-finals[10] and lost 1–3.[11] In the third place match, Bulgaria defeated Serbia and Montenegro 3–1 to clinch their fourth World Championship bronze medal.[12]
