Bugey

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bugey (French: le Bugey) is a historical region in the département of Ain, France. It is located in a loop of the Rhône River in the southeast of the département. Its capital was Belley.

The Bugey belonged to Savoy until 1601, when it was ceded to France by the Treaty of Lyon.

The residents of rural areas in the Bugey, Valromey, and Chautagne spoke Savorêt, a dialect of the Franco-Provençal language, until the 1970s.

The area is known for its wine, the Bugey VDQS.
