Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight is a comic book series published by Dark Horse Comics. The series serves as a canonical continuation of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer's final televised season.[1] It is produced by Joss Whedon who will write the first arc, The Long Way Home.[2] The first issue was released on March 14, 2007.[3] The series was originally supposed to consist of about 25 issues, but series editor Scott Allie has confirmed they are already "up to about 50, could go a little higher".[4] Although in a later Whedon interview, Joss states that it "could go as many as 25".[5] Scott Allie has said that the comic series will initially be called “Season Eight”, but there is a subtitle that will be added after issue #6.[4]

[edit] Plot details
The story takes place "at least a year and a half" after the events of "Chosen",[6] placing it at its earliest in the latter half of 2004 and after the events of "Not Fade Away".
Xander and Buffy now lead command-central, which is situated at a citadel in Scotland. At their disposal are a wide array of psychics, seers, witches and Slayers, along with a vast amount of technology. There are 1800 Slayers world-wide according to Buffy, almost 500 of which are working with the Scoobies, separated into 10 squads, with Andrew in charge of several in Southern Italy.
The U.S. government views them as terrorist cells in the wake of Sunnydale's destruction, characterizing Buffy as a "charismatic, uncompromising and completely destructive" leader. General Voll, of a mystically-aware Initiative-like government project, describes fear of their resources, power and ideology. The government has teamed with Sunnydale survivor, powerful witch Amy Madison, who seeks revenge in a newfound Big Bad role.
A sub-plot involves the repercussions of Dawn's loss of virginity.
- Anya will definitely reappear although she will not be resurrected. Whedon describes it as being "all about Anya"[7] with a possibility of an appearance by bunnies.
- Whedon plans for all the popular characters to return,[8] although the cast will be slowly introduced over the course of the series.
- Angel and Spike will definitely be featured,[8] but only sparingly.
- Faith will appear in the second arc, written by Brian K. Vaughan and set in England.
- Riley Finn and his wife may show up, but nothing is set right now as the writers of the comic are going to start with the core characters.[9]
- The demons will apparently "look cooler" without budgetary restraints, but "not as cool as Skip".[7]
- New characters include new vampire Slayers Renee, Leah, Rowena and Satsu.
- There is a mysterious unseen character character, whose boots and coat are seen hovering over the castle in issue #1 and whose torso and arms are seen in Buffy's dream sequence in issue #2; the coat, boots and red shirt resemble those worn by Spike, and in her dream, he refers to Buffy as "(his) love".
- Dark Horse Comics held a contest for one reader to be given a cameo shot in Buffy. However, upon reading the winner's entry, Joss has decided to expand that character's role. The winner was Robin Balzer, a disabled woman who found solace in Buffy.[10]
