Buffalo Hunters' War

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Buffalo Hunters' War occurred in 1877. Comanches led by Black Horse left the Indian Territory in December, 1876, for the Staked Plains of Texas. On February 22, 1877, they attacked buffalo hunters' camps in the Red River country of the Texas Panhandle, killing or wounding several. Forty-five hunters left Rath's trading post on Double Mountain Creek a few days later, and trailed the Indians, whose camp was attacked near Thompson's Canyon, Texas, March 18. The hunters were repulsed and the Indians escaped. One white was killed and several were wounded; the Indian loss is not known. The inconclusive battle ended Comanche attacks.
