[edit] History

Like many other high schools in the area, Buffalo High School (BHS) has moved from building to building as enrollment figures have grown. Education in the Buffalo area started in what is now the local theater. As time went on, what is now Discovery Elementary School and the District #877 offices became the high school. Enrollment again took a rise and the 1970s, the school was moved to a new building off of Highway 25. The suburbanization of little town Minnesota soon took its toll on Buffalo, and in 1994 a referendum for a new school east of town was approved. It was not until 1997 that the new building opened. With the opening, the previous high school building become the Buffalo Community Middle School (BCMS). The former middle school building became Discovery Elementary, which also houses the District 877 administration offices.

[edit] 2005-2006

The long awaited Bison Activity Center was finished in February of '06 after almost two years of construction.

[edit] 2006-2007

Thought as a "unique" year after only one quarter, BHS has experienced tough times in 2006 with the firing of David Macalena and death of Freshmen Brandon Lanie.

The Bison Boys Basketball team won the school's first ever state athletic team title, beating Robbinsdale Armstrong in the Class 4A final at Target Center. Senior captains Josh Ortmann, Darrin Olmscheid, and Karl Olson were voted to the All-Tournament team.

[edit] School day

BHS offers many top of the line classes for students to choose from. Over 150 total classes, and over 15 College in the Schools and AP classes are offered at BHS. The school day begins at 7:45 and ends at 2:20, using a block schedule of four class periods that last 80 minutes (Third block lasting a total of 110 minutes due to the 30 minute lunch). Passing time between classes is eight minutes, leaving ample time to get from across the school to the next class. Students are given 20 minutes at the end of the day before dismissal to meet with teachers and work on homework, which is a unique aspect to BHS. Lunch is broken down into four separate times during the third block:

  • A 10:41-11:02
  • B 11:04-11:29
  • C 11:33-11:55
  • D 11:59-12:26

The school in general is open to students and staff until 6 o'clock by which time most activities and other clubs are over. However, on occasion, the school has been known to have students occupying it until well after midnight.
