Buffalo Chips Running Club

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Buffalo Chips Running Club is the largest and oldest running club in Sacramento, California. The club was founded in 1974 and has nearly a thousand members, over half of whom are female.

Although the club boasts a number of top national caliber runners, particlularly in the older age brackets, the majority are beginning runners, recreational joggers, and middle- to back-of-the-pack fun run participants. The club also has a race walking group and an active youth program, the Chip Youths, which started in 1993.

The Buffalo Enquirer, the club's bimonthly 40-50 page news magazine, keeps members abreast of club activities, running events, and race results. It was awarded the 'Outstanding Large Club Newsletter of the Year' in 1992 and 1995 by the Road Runners Club of America.

[edit] Workouts

The club organizes a variety of regular weekly workouts:

  • Tuesday evening runs are the most popular, with over 100 participating in a variety of workouts, which are usually road intervals around a loop in a quiet industrial park not far from downtown Sacramento. Warmup starts at 5:30 pm, at the Boy Scouts Council of America on Commerce Circle off of Hwy 160 (Canterbury Exit).
  • On Thursday evenings, Chips gather on University Avenue, near Howe Avenue, getting started at 5:30 pm. From April to October, the venue shifts once a month to Fair Oaks for hill workouts.
  • On Saturday mornings Chips assemble at Howe and University Avenues for tempo runs on the American River bike trails.
  • Sunday morning long runs alternate between traverses along the American River bike trail, and hilly runs in Rescue (30 miles east of Sacramento off of Highway 50) or around Lake Natomas.
  • The race walking group meets Saturday mornings at 8:00 am and Thursday evenings at 6 pm, at the California State University, Sacramento practice track.
