Buddha Bar
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Buddha Bar is an exclusive and highly-regarded bar and restaurant in Paris, France, and is a Buddha-themed venue serving Asian cuisine. The two-storey dining area is dominated by a large statue of Buddha. The upstairs bar is a large, ornate dragon. The Buddha Bar originally became popular because of the DJ's choice of eclectic, avant-garde music.
Buddha Bar has also opened a venue in Beirut, Lebanon & Dubai, UAE, and New York City. Buddha Bar is also the name of a popular and exclusive, yet unrelated bar in Barcelona.
Compilation CDs are released under the Buddha Bar brand name, some of them have been compiled by David Visan, son of Raymond Visan, who opened the Bar in 1996. These are generally of lounge or "chill-out" music, reflecting that which played in the restaurant itself. The series was started by Claude Challe and continues today with different producers. DVDs have been released along side the series. The latest release, Buddha-Bar IX, is scheduled to be released on April 16th, 2007 according to the Buddha-Bar website.

[edit] Criticisms
Certain groups of Buddhists may have criticisms regarding the use of the Buddha statue in the bars.
- Some Buddhists may find the usage and exploitation of Buddha statues in a bar which is serving mainly alcoholic beverages and meat to be utterly offensive and provocative, because, it is claimed, Buddha stressed the importance and benefits of vegetarianism and abstinence from alcohol.
- A minority of Mahayana Buddhists strongly oppose meat-eating on certain scriptural grounds. However, the majority[citation needed] of schools of Buddhism reject such a claimed need and most Buddhists do in fact eat meat. See also: Buddhist vegetarianism
- Pancasila, the fundamental code of Buddhist ethics, which is willingly undertaken by lay followers of Gautama Buddha on logical, rather than supernaturally derived grounds, and are to be undertaken voluntarily rather than as "commandments" from a supernatural or mundane authority has at one of its points to undertake the precept to refrain from intoxicant which lead to carelessness.
- The placement of a sitting Buddha statue at Paris Buddha Bar's entrance has been highly regarded as an offense by some Buddhists due to the fact that patrons to the bar usually love to place coins on the laps of the Buddha statue, as if the statue is a mere donation box or wishing well. It is claimed that only fresh flowers may be placed on Buddha's laps.
- As diners are upstairs, the dining is above the level of the statue's head. This may be a taboo to some, due to the fact that it is taught by certain Buddhist paths that "no one can ever sit above Buddha's head".
It is not certain if the preceding two points apply by all Buddhist schools or if they are only criticisms of a minority of Buddhist schools. The admonition not to eat meat is, for example, only the opinion of a minority of followers of a certain school because of certain scriptural grounds. Scriptural grounds may also be the cause for the other criticism regarding "sitting above Buddha's head" and only fresh flowers on Buddha's lap.
