Buckton Castle

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Buckton Castle is an Iron Age hill fort and castle near Carrbrook, Stalybridge , England. It is listed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The site has provided archaelogical evidence dating back to the 8th and 10th centuries. It is the oldest surviving building in the Tame valley, located on Buckton Hill, a steep sandstone ridge about 335 meters above sea level.

The castle is a ringwork composed of a raised platform, approximately 35 meters by 40 meters and roughly rectangular. There are remains of a bailey on the northern side, but they are not dated to the medieval era.
