Buckstones

This article refers to the residential suburb of Buckstones, rather than the area of moorland by the same name.

Buckstones is a popular residential suburb of Shaw and Crompton, in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, Greater Manchester, England.

Buckstones could be loosely defined as the area which falls within, or directly adjacent to, the boundaries of George Street, Grains Road and Buckstones Road. (see map).

In former times, the area was known as Crompton Fold, and was the home of Crompton Hall. Until major development arrived, Crompton Fold was an area of farmland, moorland and forest.

With the arrival of housing development, Crompton Fold was unofficially renamed after its largest estate; Buckstones, which was itself named after an area of unpopulated moorland which lies between Shaw and Crompton and Huddersfield. It is also the name of a local and historic road that runs through the area connecting Shaw and Crompton with Denshaw, Saddleworth; Buckstones Road.

As the area was only unofficially renamed, Buckstones does not appear in any official mapping systems, whereas Crompton Fold does. Contrastingly, local communities refer to the area as Buckstones, however.

Whilst featuring some highly exclusive housing and being perhaps one of Oldham's most desirable areas, Buckstones is a somewhat banal suburb, comprising mainly of detached residential housing built from around the 1970s until the 1980s. Its most eminent structures could be said to include Buckstones Primary School, Shore Edge Methodist Church, St. Saviours Church of England Church and perhaps a moderately served GMPTE bus terminus/turnaround.
