Buckley is a surname originating from the British Isles. It is particularly common throughout parts of England and Ireland, as well as Canada and the United States.

Sources provide conflicting etymologies for the Buckley surname, though all indicate some part of the British Isles as an origin; some sources outline a Gaelic (Irish) origin,^[1] whereas others outline an Anglo-Saxon (English) origin.^[2]

The Buckley family of England were first recorded to be in Cheshire, where the family held a seat from very ancient times.^[3]

This branch of the Buckley family is credited by some sources as being of Anglo-Saxon origin, either as a habitation surname derived from settlements named Buckley, or as an occupational surname from the Anglo-Saxon words Bucc and Leah, meaning goat and wood.^[4]

The surname Buckley is the 435th most common name in the United Kingdom.^[5] It is particularly common in Surrey, but also Cheshire, Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire amoungst other places.

A branch of the Buckley family lived in Buckley, Greater Manchester in Rochdale for many centuries.^[6] They gave their name to Buckley Hall a manorhouse found within the locality.

The Buckley family of Ireland, are believed to be from County Ofally in Ireland, although the name now exists as Buhilly and Boughla.

This name was brought in to Ulster in the seventeenth Century by settlers. It is now more commonly found in Counties Cork and Tipperary. The Gaelic Meaning of the name is taken from a word meaning "boy".^[7]
