Buckland Hill Reservoir

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Buckland Hill Reservoir is well know for two reasons. Firstly the reservoir is the most westerly reservoir in the Perth metropolitan area. Secondly because it has arguably the best views of any reservoir in Australia. The panorama from the reservoir takes in Rottnest and Garden Islands and Fremantle Port and Swan River mouth to the west and Lucky Bay and Bicton and East Fremantle to the east. The reservoir is generally filled with water from the dams and also features a high tech treatment plant. It supplies nearby houses with water through gravity.

The reservoir is built on top of a limestone ridge adjacent the lighthouse and obelisk between 1934-35. The obelisk had to be shifted after the completion of construction of the reservoir. The hill was originally a much greater hight but was quarried for the limestone. In 1941 the reservoir was forced to share the hill with the Royal Australian Army's Leighton Battery. The area around the reservoir is a popular parking place for lovers.
