Brussels, Illinois

Brussels is a village in Calhoun County, Illinois, United States. The population was 141 at the 2000 census.

Brussels has one school district, No. 42, which consists of one grade school (Brussels Grade School) and one high school (Brussels High School). The school district serves the surrounding communities of Meppen, Golden Eagle, and parts of Batchtown. In addition to the public school system Brussels is also home to a parochial grade school (St. Marys). Brussels High School is small and its population usually hovers at around 70 students.
Located within the village limits of Brussels are two churches, one Lutheran (St. Matthews) and one Catholic (St. Marys). The congregation of St. Marys is larger than that of St. Matthews but both draw in parishioners from the surrounding communities.
The town of Brussels contains a variety of options for dining and nightlife. Brussels contains three establishments which serve food daily. These are AJs Tavern, Whittmond’s Hotel, and The Peach Tree. Both AJs and The Peach Tree serve the standard fare of any mom and pop restaurant, items such as hamburgers and french fries are typical but there is often a daily special. Whittmond’s serves dishes which include: open-faced roast beef, sausage, or fried chicken with a variety of sides. In addition to providing food, both AJs and Whittmond’s have bars that serve alcoholic beverages. Brussels also has Senger’s Too, a bar of the typical variety.
The only other business of note within Brussels is the Red and White grocery store. This small locally owned store provides the community with a close location to purchase necessities without having to drive miles to the next closest store.

Brussels is located at GR1
(38.947275, -90.588630).According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 141 people, 60 households, and 40 families residing in the village. The population density was 89.2/km² (232.4/mi²). There were 70 housing units at an average density of 44.3/km² (115.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 100.00% White. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.84% of the population.
There were 60 households out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% are married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size was 2.80.
In the village the population was spread out with 20.6% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there were 104.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $40,938, and the median income for a family was $46,250. Males had a median income of $29,375 versus $15,417 for females. The per capita income for the village was $16,281. 11.4% of the population and 5.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, none of those under the age of 18 and 17.4% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
