Brush Tunnel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brush Tunnel is a railroad tunnel in Maryland. It was originally built in 1911 by the Western Maryland Railroad, and is currently used by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, a tourist railroad running between Frostburg and Cumberland, Maryland. In recent years there has been controversy regarding proposed dual use of the tunnel. The Allegheny Highlands Trail of Maryland is currently under construction from Cumberland to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, using mostly abandoned rail right-of-way. The trail will be adjacent to the active tourist line, however, including the tunnel, and there were safety concerns at first. As the tunnel was built to hold two tracks, and the current line has only one, there appears to be sufficient room for both uses, and (as of 2006) the trail will be finished soon.
