Created in late 1969-early 1970, Bruff Rugby Union Football Club was created by two G.A.A. Players, Willie Conway and Nicholas Cooke. Its first game was played in the field to the rear of the church in the town watched by nearly the entire village. Early in the 1970's the Club President. Lt. Col. The O' Grady, donated a gate-lodge to his estate as a dressing room and sold a pitch to the club for the princely sum of £1.
The club grounds at Kilballyowen Park presently include an area of approximately 13 acres, with 3 full pitches, all of which are proposed to be fully floodlit to match standard during the coming year.

The Club Pavilion has a newly revamped bar, a large dance area with full disco and mood lighting, kitchen facilities, gymnasium, steam room & sauna.

The club currently plays in Div. 3 of the AIB League having graduated from Junior club status in the 2003-2004 season. Notable players from the club include Stephen Keogh (Munster, Leinster), John Hayes (Munster, Ireland & Lions)and many other players in Di. 1 clubs including former Division 1 Garryowen Football Club captain, Peter Malone and former Shannon Club Captain Tom Hayes. The gaining of senior club status has resulted in the return of many players to the club most notably this season with the return of former Shannon Captain Eoin Cahill to his home club as Player/Coach.
