Bruern
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bruern or Bruern Abbey is a village and civil parish in the West Oxfordshire district of Oxfordshire, England. According to the 2001 census, it had a population of 62. The village is on the River Evenlode, close to the border with Gloucestershire, and about six miles north of Burford.
The village once contained a Cistercian Abbey founded in 1147 by Nicholas Basset as a daughter house of Waverley Abbey in Surrey. It was dissolved in 1536 and became the property of Sir Anthony Cope. A large 18th century house (private) may occupy the site. A nearby Georgian cottage contains a three bay vaulted chamber which may relate to the monastery.
