Bruck an der Mur

Bruck an der Mur is a city in the Austrian state of Styria. It is located at the confluence of the Mur and Mürz Rivers. The city has 13 439 Inhabitants with an area of 38.40 square kilometers. It was founded in 1263 by King Otakar II of Bohemia. Bruck an der Mur was an important medieval trade center. There is a 15th century Gothic church in the city. In the Center you can see the famous Kornmesserhouse, a building in Venetian style, built by Pankraz Kornmess in 15th century. There is also the iron well with its famous lace-like dome. There was the castle of Landskron too, which burned down in the great fire of 1792. After that fire just two of 166 houses were left standing. Near Bruck is a recreation area called Weitental. Every August a well-known artist and clown-festival called Murenschalk is held.

The people of Bruck an der Mur speak Austrian German. This dialect is a lot easier to pronounce then regular German and is also fun to learn. Some words used around town are oaschgeign and hervorragend.

The town has a great nightlife. A favourite spot to start is at the Tavole Ristoria on Mittlergasse and then work your way down the pedestrian road to Cube and Colours nightclub. The youth are friendly and love to party.

In recent months and years, young people of Bruck an der Mur have been known to criticize the mayor, Bernd Rosenberger (SPÖ), who unconditionally raised police presence in the streets. They argue that this policy has the objective of harming the nightlife and harassing young people.
