David Bruce Cowan is an Australian politician. His daughter Rosemary is married to the Deputy Leader of the New South Wales Liberal Party, Barry O'Farrell.

[edit] Early life

Bruce Cowan was born on 15 January 1926 in Taree, New South Wales. He was educated at Oxley Island Primary School and Taree High School [1]. He worked as a farmer, real estate agent, and stock and station agent [2].

Cowan was a member of the Country Party of Australia central executive in 1952 - 1953 and 1958 [1].

During the 1950's and 60's he served as an Alderman on the Taree Shire Council and its successor the Taree Municipal Council [1].

In 1965 he was elected to the seat of Oxley in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. He was elected six times, and served as Minister for Agriculture and Minister for Water Resources between 1975 and 1976 [1].

In 1980 Bruce Cowan won National Country Party preselection for the Federal seat of Lyne when Philip Lucock retired from politics. Cowan faced the Labour candidate and councillor Leslie Brown and the Liberal Party's Milton Morris who was the member for Maitland in the NSW Lower House. Although Brown won more primary votes, preferences from Morris were more than enough to ensure the Cowan was elected [2].

Bruce Cowan retired from the Parliament of Australia on 13 March 1993 and was succeeded by Mark Vaile.
