Bruce Clay is a professional search engine optimization consultant. He was interviewed by Wired Magazine in their 2004 feature "The Complete Guide to Googlemania!" [1] and cited by USA Today in their article "Gunning for search engines" from August 20, 2003 [2]. His website is referenced to by NARA - ALIC - User's Guide to the Internet at The National Archives as resource for "Web Site Promotion Tactics and Tools" [3].

He and his company are active with industry organizations such as: SEMPO, the Search Engine Strategies conference, IMC USA, Web Analytics Association, American Marketing Association, IIMA - International Internet Marketing Association and the California Chamber of Commerce.

Clay is the CEO of the search engine marketing firm Bruce Clay, Inc. which he founded in 1996.

Bruce Clay also maintains the frequently updated Search Engine Relationship Chart histogram for the US Search Engines which is referred to by numerous major resources in the industry like Search Engine Watch, Webmaster World Forums and Hitwise.[4]

He is the Author of the SEO Code of Ethics which was translated into 18 other languages. Many SEO Companies either adopted the Ethical code directly or used it as basis for their own version of the code.[5] The document was controversial[6] back in 2001 when it was published, at a time when the new search marketing industry was "Desperately Seeking Search Engine Marketing Standards[6]."

As of 2006 there does not exist an independent training and professional certification authority for the subject SEO.
