[edit] Thanks for your support in my RfA!
Thanks for voting! Hello Brownlee, and thanks for your support in my recent RfA. I'm pleased to announce that it passed with a final tally of (96/0/0). I was overwhelmed by all of the nice comments and votes of confidence from everyone. Thanks again, and see you around! OhNoitsJamie Talk 02:09, 7 July 2006 (UTC) |
[edit] Oscar Niemeyer
I have a suspicion Niemeyer is probably not Jewish, and was just assumed to be by your source due to his German-sounding surname and since he spent some time working in Israel. I've not seen any biography of his mentioning any Jewish heritage, which is odd for such a major figure. Also, none of his family surnames are common Jewish names, and his maternal grandfather Ribeiro de Almeida was a very senior jurist in 19th century Brazil, which would have been very unusual for a Jew. Of course, this is all circumstantial, and thus original research. Still, if you find a better source (or any evidence to the contrary), I would be interested in knowing. Udzu 18:53, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
- JewishBrazil.com seems to think he's Jewish. You could presumably email them (english@jewishbrazil.com) for further information, I imagine they would be forthcoming. - Jmabel | Talk 16:21, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Lists of Jews

[edit] Comprise
Thanks for participating in the peer review for Concerto delle donne. I'm particularly glad you fixed the capitalization of "Duke." I wanted to drop a word about "comprise," though. According to Merriam-Webster, there are three definitions for "comprise": 1. to include especially within a particular scope; 2. to be made up of; and 3. to compose or constitute. They add the following proviso:
- "Although it has been in use since the late 18th century, sense 3 is still attacked as wrong. Why it has been singled out is not clear, but until comparatively recent times it was found chiefly in scientific or technical writing rather than belles lettres. Our current evidence shows a slight shift in usage: sense 3 is somewhat more frequent in recent literary use than the earlier senses. You should be aware, however, that if you use sense 3 you may be subject to criticism for doing so, and you may want to choose a safer synonym such as compose or make up."
Just bear in mind that it's not hard and fast that this third meaning (where "is comprised of" means "is composed of") is wrong. Peirigill 21:50, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
- (Replied "Mea culpa; I was thinking of British English and hadn't realised that American English is different.")

[edit] List of Brazilian Jews
I suggest you mention on TALK:List of Brazilian Jews how evaluating a source as unreliable via WP:RS is vandalism especially when quotations from Wikipedia's own policies states I am in my right to dispute the addition of Niemeyer on the list as long as I don't push for another POV (actually, thats not vandalism either according to WP:VANDAL). I highlighted the parts for you. Also, as far as I see in WP:VANDAL, it even says that stubborness, my greatest fault, is not vandalism. I have pretty sufficiently explained my reasons in the talk page. I hope you maintain civility (WP:CIVIL) and continue this debate rather than stooping to the level of vandalism accusations. 72.144.158.139 00:54, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
This guy up here has kidnapped the article. It's a pitty. I wonder why he chose exactly an article about Brazilians, maybe because North American Jews are more Jews... --Dantadd 12:42, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Edit Summary
Hello, I've observed that you rolled back an editor's attempt to clarify the reasons for inclusion in Category:Jewish mathematicians with the accusation that he violated WP:V and WP:NPOV. This is perhaps a little hasty of you. The category just survived CfD - and the editor in question was one of the most effective defenders of such religion-and-occupation based cats. He was attempting to protect this cat from being nominated again, or from bloating with individuals who should not be there according to guidelines. Your edit summary was incivil and inaccurate, and your rollback was unnecessary.Hornplease 22:13, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
-
- That was not the consensus on the CfD page, wherein this and several other similar cats for other religions survived deletion purely on the basis of a strict interpretation of who would be in the cat. I am afraid that I must ask you how precisely WP:NPOV is violated by seeking to apply to Judaism what was decided on for all other religions, namely joint notability. If that is not held to, the cat may be deleted.Hornplease 21:09, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Deprod Sadashivrao D Mandlik
Hi. I deprodded this because members of a legislature (national or state) are automatically notable for WP:BIO. It turned out though that the existing article on him had been misnamed. --Mereda 09:54, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Peter Parker
Hello Brownlee!! I noticed someone added and you removed Peter Parker from list of fictional Jews. Although nothing explicit has been stated about this in the comic books (I would know), do you think this would be a sufficient source that he is Jewish? I'm not sure myself: [1] "Although he may still be in the closet, Weinstein believes that his favorite comic book character – Spider Man – is Jewish.
“Peter Parker’s a nerd who grew up in Forest Hills and is motivated by guilt,” said Weinstein. “I see a connection.”
Weinstein’s suspicions about Spider-Man were confirmed when he came across golden age comic book illustrator Patti Cochran, who told him that the Marvel Comics editorial staff always worked off the belief that he was Jewish." Mad Jack 09:06, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
- OK Brownlee, I have added Parker in there with a note explaining what's up in that case. Thanks for the input. :-) Mad Jack 06:50, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] My RfA
Oh, the humanity!
I had my doubts about a second RfA, but even I couldn't have predicted the way it caught fire and inexorably drifted to the ground in flames, causing quite a stir on its way down. Still, it was encouraging to see the level of support and confidence. Thank you for yours, and I hope I'll still have it the next time around. Kafziel Talk 13:56, 29 November 2006 (UTC) |

[edit] David Ricardo and the List of British Jews
Hi. I took down the tutor2u.net link again. There's some history with tutor2u.net links -- see the discussion at WikiProject Spam.
I think the link I replaced it with is an improvement, but if there's a consensus to go back to the tutor2u.net link, feel free to do so.
I have left additional comments on the article talk page. --A. B. (talk) 05:01, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deleting Categories of Jewish Athletes
Hi. I believe this is related to an issue that has interested you in the past. At http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion#Category:Jewish_fencers some people are suggesting that Jewish athletes, beginning with Jewish Fencers, should be deleted. I do not think that is the correct approach, or consistent with wiki policy, and thought that others might want to weigh in on the discussion. [edit] List of Iberian Jews - Jorge Sampaio
Hello Brownlee. I see you have reverted my deletion of Jorge Sampaio in the List of Iberian Jews. I shall not revert you edit, but I must disagree with you - you can not count everyone with some Jewish ancestry as a Jew, that would probably mean, if you go further back in time, everyone in Europe (just to speak of Europe). Yes, Sampaio is proud of his Jewish ancestry. That's great! But he himself is not Jewish in any relevant way. I think he should not be listed. The Ogre 14:10, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
