Brovst

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brovst is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in North Jutland County on the northwest coast of the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 223 km², and has a total population of 8,340 (2005). Its mayor is Mogens C. Gade, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Brovst.

Neighboring municipalities with land connection are Aabybro and Pandrup to the east and Fjerritslev to the west. Because Brovst municipality is located on the north shore of the Limfjord, the waterway that separates the main body of the Jutland peninsula from the island of Vendsyssel-Thy, its southern municipal neighbor Nibe, which is located on the Jutland mainland, is separated from Nibe by water. The waters in this area are called Agger Strait (Agger Sund) and Gjøl Bredning. The cove Vejlen helps to define part of its southern border.

To the north is Jammer Bay (Jammerbugt), and beyond that the Skagerrak, the strait that separates Denmark from Norway.

By January 1, 2007 Brovst municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Fjerritslev, Pandrup, and Aabybro municipalities to form the new Jammerbugt municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 863 km² and a total population of 38,864 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Nordjylland ("North Jutland Region").
