A Brotherhood of Makuta Fortress

In LEGO Bionicle fictional universe, the Brotherhood of Makuta is composed of several powerful beings with the title of "Makuta" that make the island of Destral their home. The members of the Brotherhood (save one) have yet to appear in the Bionicle storyline, but some lieutenants and many underlings have been shown. The Brotherhood of Makuta was originally a force for good in the universe, but eventually became corrupt and sought power.

[edit] History

The Brotherhood originally existed to create and alter beings as needed to keep the universe running smoothly;[1] in following this mission they created nearly all known Rahi beasts.[2] In addition to this, they also aided the Great Spirit Mata Nui in his job of protecting the world and its people. However, the Brotherhood eventually became corrupt after the defeat of the League of the Six Kingdoms (see Barraki), culminating in one member attacking Mata Nui. The rest of the Brotherhood supported this attack, and are now working to fill the resulting power vacuum and become the world's rulers. The corruption was only revealed a thousand years ago in the Great Cataclysm; when Mata Nui finally fell unconscious from his injuries, and the Makuta who attacked him tried to brainwash the Matoran of Metru Nui into forgetting their Great Spirit.

As part of their plans, the Brotherhood has taken several actions to insure their dominance:

  • Knowing legends of a Toa of Light and the threat that it represents (particularly for creatures of shadow), they stole the Avohkii Mask of Light from its makers in Artahka. However, the mask was stolen by the Toa Hagah three hundred years before the Cataclysm, and was recently claimed by its destined wearer, Toa Takanuva.
  • Three hundred years ago, they had conquering armies that included Visorak, Dark Hunters, and Exo-Toa; the armies were later reduced to just Visorak though Exo-Toa were still used separately.
  • The Brotherhood is also seeking to control at least two extremely powerful and dangerous Kanohi Masks: the Vahi Mask of Time and the Ignika Mask of Life.
    • No action is currently being taken to claim the Vahi, for it is held by Turaga Vakama, who would risk destroying the future rather than give it up.[3]
    • Any act to claim the Ignika would be done through pawns, because the mask is cursed. This mask is desired for the ability to take life from enemies, and so that the Brotherhood can control when Mata Nui is healed.[4]

The Brotherhood has been weakened considerably in the past thousand years. Due to actions taken in the Cataclysm, the Dark Hunters have declared war on the Brotherhood, and the Toa have taken advantage of the fighting to strike the Brotherhood whenever they can. However, the Brotherhood's master plan is still in effect: since the Matoran of Metru Nui escaped and met up with a team of Toa - Toa that weren't easily eliminated - Mata Nui will eventually be allowed to reawaken... and then a reign of darkness will be released such as no Matoran has ever imagined, even in their worst nightmare.[5] It is unknown whether this plan takes into consideration the possible existence of such an organization as the Order of Mata Nui.

[edit] Members

All members of the Brotherhood are of a single race (also called "Makuta"), and have long since evolved past the point where they need physical bodies.[6] As a result, they exist as masses of energy that merely inhabit and animate unliving armor (see "Powers" section in the article for the Brotherhood's leader for details, though individual members' powers might differ somewhat). For some reason, Makuta armor is inherently tougher than solid protodermis, though still not quite as strong as the hardest metal known, protosteel.[7]

The following abilities are also shared among every Makuta:

  • Makuta can create Kraata from their essences, which can then be transformed into Rahkshi armor that a second Kraata can control. A Kraata can wield one of the powers held by the Makuta who created it.
  • All Makuta have the elemental power of shadow.
  • All Makuta wear Kanohi Masks, and weaken when they are removed.[8]

In addition, the Brotherhood "as it is currently constituted" is somehow connected to an unknown curse; further details have not yet been revealed.[9]

[edit] Makuta of Metru Nui

Main article: Makuta

The Makuta of Metru Nui is considered "the most experienced and powerful in all the Brotherhood",[10] and has become the de facto leader since the rest of the Brotherhood supported his plan to put the Great Spirit Mata Nui into an eternal sleep. When simply referring to a character as "Makuta", it is this one that is being referenced. However, Makuta does not seem to take priority over any of the other members, as in the Brotherhood's plan to take over the universe, they are apparently willing to let him perish if it means they can secure power.[11]

[edit] Other Members

  • The Makuta of the Zakaz area[citation needed] has left the Brotherhood and gone into hiding; the Dark Hunter codenamed "Tracker" is currently hunting him down.[12]
  • Another Makuta was subjected to the power draining effects of the Dark Hunter "Conjurer"; Conjurer has been rendered comatose, but it is unknown how the Brotherhood member was affected.[13]
  • A Makuta was assigned to the region of Artakha; he is now dead.[14]

[edit] Servants

The following beings are not Brotherhood members, but rather served under them. Note that this list does not include those who were enslaved, manipulated, or forced into service; but it does include machines programmed to follow the Brotherhood's commands.

  • Exo-Toa - the Brotherhood programmed a number of these machines to act as sentries.
  • The Morbuzakh - A plant being that Makuta created to drive the Matoran of Metru Nui to the city's center in the time leading up to the Great Cataclysm. It was destroyed by the Toa Metru, using the Great Kanoka Disks.
  • Rahkshi - All Brotherhood members can create sluglike Kraata from their essences, which can then be transformed into Rahkshi armor.
  • Shadow Toa - The dark sides of Toa, given physical form. They can perfectly counter the attacks of the Toa they were made from, but fare much worse against other opponents. So far, we have only seen shadow versions of the Toa Mata.
  • Visorak - The Visorak served as the Brotherhood's main conquering army, led by King Sidorak and his Viceroy, Roodaka; the two also briefly appointed Vakama Hordika as the horde's field commander. After Sidorak was killed at the hands of Keetongu, Roodaka ascended to the position of Visorak Queen - until Vakama gave the hordes the order to disband; as Roodaka betrayed their King, the Visorak were perfectly willing to abandon the traitor. Eventually, the Brotherhood was able to reform some of the armies. Roodaka still acts on behalf of the Brotherhood at times (see under "Traitors and Rebels", below)

Makuta had previously offered Toa Vakama a position with the Brotherhood for his accomplishment of forging a Vahi Mask of Time, but Vakama had steadfastly refused.

Also, the Dark Hunter leader, the Shadowed One, suspects that the loyalties of the Hunter codenamed "Vanisher" actually lie with the Brotherhood. He has tasked one Hunter with spying on Vanisher, and a second one to spy on both in case the first spy is also a Brotherhood double-agent.

[edit] Traitors and Rebels

There are also a number of beings who are connected with the Brotherhood, yet have openly or secretly gone against the organization for some reason or another.

  • Dark Hunters - The Brotherhood and Dark Hunters once had a close working relationship, but when Makuta killed two Dark Hunters to increase his own power, it sparked a war between the two groups that continues to this day.
  • Fake Bohrok - The Brotherhood tried to have purely mechanical Bohrok built to follow their commands, but the Matoran engineers building them caught wind of this and programmed them to go on a rampage. The Toa Hagah destroyed the Bohrok and the Brotherhood executed the Matoran. The fakes are known among fans as "Faux-rok" or "Fohrok".
  • Karzahni - Makuta's first attempt at creating a plant creature, but it was too powerful and ambitious, so he created the Morbuzakh in its place. The Karzahni seeks revenge on its creator. It was destroyed once by energized protodermis (as it was not destined to transform), but then resprouted when its remains came into contact with seawater. It was destroyed again when Makuta encased it in a shell, cutting it off from heat and light.
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
  • Pridak - Pridak once ruled a small land on behalf of the Brotherhood, but went on to become one of the six Barraki warlords leading the League of the Six Kingdoms. It was the Barraki who first tried overthrowing Mata Nui, and who inspired Makuta to try to do it himself.
Spoilers end here.
  • Roodaka - Since the Visorak armies dissolved, Roodaka now acts as a double agent, selling inside information on the Dark Hunters to the Brotherhood of Makuta. However, what the Makuta doesn't know is that she's also selling Brotherhood information to the Hunters.
  • Toa Hagah - Elite Toa who served as bodyguards to the Brotherhood before the group's corruption was publicly known. When they discovered what the Brotherhood was truly up to, they rebelled. They were mutated into Rahaga as punishment, but not before they stole the Avohkii Mask of Light from a Brotherhood stronghold.

[edit] Mutants

In keeping with their original mission, the Brotherhood has been known to create several mutant creatures for different purposes.

  • Morbuzakh and Karzahni - As described above, the Karzahni and the Morbuzakh were plant creatures created to kidnap Matoran and drive them to the center of Metru Nui. Both were intelligent and able to communicate telepathically. However, the Karzahni became too powerful and was replaced by the Morbuzakh.
  • Dark Hunters - When hiring Dark Hunters, it was common practice for the Brotherhood to pay for services with either physical enhancements, or with mutant creatures the Hunters could use. Avak said that his ability to create custom, inescapable prisons out of thin air was thanks to the Brotherhood (though this claim has been called into question; see Avak's entry under "Piraka"). Brotherhood-created mutants given to the Hunters include:
    • Kraata-Kal - A Kraata that was exposed to the same energies that turned six Bohrok into Bohrok-Kal. Kraata-Kal is now a full-fledged member of the Dark Hunters, though he sometimes puts his own profit ahead of the mission. He controls the elements of fire, water, and shadow; and wears armor more powerful than Rahkshi armor that's equipped with a double-bladed flame sword and a Kanoka launcher.
    • Minion - A Rahi experiment that the Brotherhood didn't realize had become intelligent. Rather than being given to the Dark Hunters, he escaped when the Toa Hagah rebelled. Luckily for the Brotherhood, Minion can't or won't tell the Brotherhood secrets he learned. Minion has tough armor, sharp claws, and exceptional tracking skills.
    • The Rahi Nui - A creature that's a Frankenstein-like combination of parts from several Rahi. It was bred to hunt down Toa, and could detect and feed off of their elemental energy. A thousand years ago it was loaned to the Dark Hunters; the Toa Metru faced it and were able to defeat it, but not before it critically injured Toa Nokama. More recently, it seems to have come back under Makuta's control; it faced the Toa Nuva and ended up with its horns stuck firmly in a wall.
    • Voporak - One of the ways Sidorak gained favor with the Brotherhood was by betraying one of the clan leaders on his island. This leader was mutated into Voporak, created in anticipation of the day when a Vahi Mask of Time would be made. Voporak could sense temporal anomalies wherever they occurred, and could therefore track down the Vahi when it is used; he also aged anything he touched unless he willed otherwise, and had a defensive field that aged incoming attacks. Voporak was given to the Dark Hunters to learn discipline; and after sensing the Vahi's use by Toa Vakama, he claimed the mask and gave it to the Shadowed One. As of now, Voporak is still in the hands of the Hunters, and he and the Hunter codenamed "Ancient" are tracking down the Vahi again after Toa Tahu used it.

[edit] Possible Creations

  • Krana/Kraata Hybrid - A strange creature that can attach to someone's face and give them visions. Toa Onewa was given horrific visions of the Visorak by one of these creatures. Later, Toa Vakama was able to communicate with a future Toa named Krakua using a second creature. They only look like a cross between a Krana and a Kraata, and are not necessarily related to either.[15] It has not been confirmed that these creatures are actually the result of a Brotherhood experiment, but considering the Brotherhood's history of genetic tampering and the fact that the hybrids were found in lairs of Makuta's, it seems likely. These creatures are commonly referred to by fans as "Kraatana".
  • Worms - Strange creatures that broke inside Bohrok shells and killed the Krana inside. They then took control of the Bohrok and fled deep beneath Mangaia. It seems that they may have been made by Makuta.[16]
