Brookwood High School is a public high school in the United States for students in Grades 9-12. The school is located in Snellville, Georgia, and has a population of over 3,000 students. Brookwood High School serves several areas of Gwinnett County, including Lawrenceville and Lilburn.

  • The school's address is 1255 Dogwood Road, Snellville, GA 30078.
  • The school mascot is the broncos. Various sketches of broncos were considered before students chose the final pose. The runner-up for the mascot was bears.
  • The school colors are Maroon and Gold. Brookwood’s colors were chosen by students. The runner-up was Carolina blue.
  • The school motto is "a tradition of excellence." The original motto was “Establishing a tradition of excellence.” This evolved into the current motto.
  • The school crest consists of four symbols, respectively standing for "key to knowledge, communities that came together to form Brookwood, fine arts, and extracurricular activities."[2]

  • The school is separated into various halls, from A through F Hall.
  • A Hall is primarily for senior core classes, and foreign language. B Hall is primarily for electives such as art, engineering, computing, and several others. C Hall currently is primarily for technical classes and special education. D Hall contains the two gyms and locker rooms. E Hall is for sophomore classes while F hall is commonly known as the "Freshman Hall" and is designated primarily for ninth graders.
  • As of late February of 2006, the new A100 and A200 building was opened. It is filled with over twenty classrooms. A new building containing replacement band and orchestra rooms adjacent to F Hall opened recently.

  • There are six fifty-four minute classes with six minutes between each class. Lunch periods are twenty-two minutes long with a five minute gap between each of the four lunches; this occurs during the fifth period, which is extended in comparison with the first four and the sixth. This schedule was recently adjusted to a 7 period day with the extra period constisting of a 30 minute lunch and a 30 minute guided study period which would replace the previous homeroom schedule.
  • The buses arrive around 7:00 A.M. The first bell rings at 7:20 A.M. School officially starts at 7:30 A.M. each day and ends at 2:10 P.M.

  • The plans for Brookwood High School were started in 1977 to lessen the overcrowding of nearby high schools of South Gwinnett and Parkview. A committee of educators from Gwinnett County met together to create and discuss specifications for the facility. The school officially opened in 1981 under the leadership of principal Emmett Lawson. Currently, the principal of the school is Jane Stegall with associate principals Debra Dees and David Smith.
  • The school derived its name literally from its location on the intersection of Holly Brook Road and Dogwood Road. Recently the school has celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special dance, chorus, and orchestra concert.

[edit] Fine arts

As in academics and athletics, Brookwood High School exhibits an excellent variety of fine arts, from dance, to theatre, to Band, to a Full Orchestra.

The theatre program at Brookwood is recognized statewide for its excellence. Longtime directors Ken and Patty Lindahl are nationally known for the quality of their productions.

In 2005, Brookwood finished second at the state One-Act Competition with their production of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods. And In 2006, Brookwood finished 2nd at the regional One-Act Competition with Jekyll and Hyde.

The Dance Department, composed of several different levels and types of classes, performs two shows a year, each with a different theme.

The music program at Brookwood grows at a great rate every year. The orchestra currently has over 250 players compared to the fewer than 70 seven years ago.

Brookwood's marching band is also large and a very popular activity. The band travels with the varsity football team, marches in the Homecoming Parade, and competes in state and county competition.

The Brookwood High School student-run paper is titled The Sentinel and features school, political, and entertainment articles.

The school's yearbook, also student-run, is called Cayuse.

A literature club also produces a yearly magazine, Pegasus which is released alongside the yearkbook. The magazine features short stories, essays, songs, and poetry written and submitted by current Brookwood Students.

The Mock Trial Team is considered a varsity sport. The team, composed of all grades and genders, has done well in the past, taking the title of Regional Champions in the 2005-2006 season and Regional Champion Runner-up in the 2006-2007 season.

Brookwood is the high school of the Brookwood cluster. A cluster is a group of schools which feed into one primary high school for an area in Gwinnett County. Elementary schools feed into middle schools, which in turn feed into the high school.
