Brooks Eckerd Pharmacy is a chain of approximately 2,000 pharmacies operating in 18 states on the Eastern half of the United States in Midwest, Southeast and East Coast regions. It is the 4th largest drugstore chain in the country. Brooks Eckerd Pharmacy is currently a unit of the Quebec-based Jean Coutu Group. The corporate headquarters is located in Rhode Island.

[edit] History

Brooks Eckerd Pharmacy was created when Jean Coutu purchased Eckerd from its parent J.C. Penney and merged it with Brooks Pharmacy, Jean Coutu's other pharmacy.

Recently, Brooks Eckerd is introducing new prototype stores that feature generous patient counseling space and state-of-the-art pharmacy services.

On August 23, 2006, the Wall Street Journal annouced that Rite Aid would be buying the Eckerd Pharmacy and Brooks Pharmacy chains from the Quebec-based Jean Coutu Group for US$3.4 billion. Once the deal closes, all Brooks and Eckerd stores will be rebranded as Rite Aid or be closed, depending on proximity to existing Rite-Aid stores and other factors.
