Brooklyn (musical)

Brooklyn the Musical (or BKLYN the Musical) was a musical which opened on Broadway in 2004. Playing at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, previews began on September 21 and main performances began on October 4. The show closed on June 26, 2005 for almost a year; the show opened again and a national tour began on June 11, 2006.
The show is set on a street corner located underneath the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, where five street-corner singers tell a sidewalk fairy tale about a young girl who comes to Brooklyn (which also happens to be her name) to use her newfound fame to try and find her father.
The musical's book, music, and lyrics were all written by Mark Schoenfeld and Barri McPherson. Jeff Calhoun was the director.
The original cast consisted of Eden Espinosa as the leading role (Brooklyn), Kevin Anderson as her father (Taylor Collins), Cleavant Derricks as the Street Singer, Karen Olivo as Brooklyn's mother (Faith), and Ramona Keller as the story's antagonist (Paradice). The cast also starred Manoel Felciano, Caren Lyn Manuel, Julie Reiber, Horace V. Rogers, and Haneefah Wood.
On the 2006 tour of the show, Diana DeGarmo of American Idol fame starred as Brooklyn, the title character, with Lonna Marie Spitaleri as her understudy. Melba Moore played Paradice; Cleavant Derricks recreated his role as the Street Singer; Lee Morgan played Brooklyn's father (Taylor Collins); and Julie Reiber played Brooklyn's mother (Faith).
Currently, a plan for creating a Japanese version of the play has been made. Tomiko Van is confirmed to be in the production.
