Brookhaven, Mississippi

Brookhaven is a small city in Lincoln County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,861 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Lincoln CountyGR6. It was named after the Town of Brookhaven, New York, by founder Samuel Jayne, in 1818.

Brookhaven is located at 31°34′54″N, 90°26′34″W (31.581704, -90.442806)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.0 km² (7.3 mi²). 19.0 km² (7.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.27%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 9,861 people, 3,810 households, and 2,480 families residing in the city. The population density was 519.4/km² (1,345.6/mi²). There were 4,240 housing units at an average density of 223.3/km² (578.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 47.55% White, 50.91% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.18% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.79% of the population.

There were 3,810 households out of which 31.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.9% were married couples living together, 21.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% were non-families. 31.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.10.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 82.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $24,632, and the median income for a family was $30,950. Males had a median income of $28,079 versus $20,047 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,695. About 23.3% of families and 26.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.8% of those under age 18 and 25.0% of those age 65 or over.

  • Perhaps the most notorious citizen of Brookhaven is Canadian-born Bernie Ebbers, former CEO of MCI-Worldcom.
  • Bob Pittman (founder MTV, former CEO and COO AOL), born in Brookhaven.
  • Lance Alworth, Pro Football Hall of Fame player from 1962-1972.
  • Jim Brewer, famous Maxwell Street blues musician, was born in Brookhaven.
  • Earvin Johnson, Sr (father of Magic Johnson) played basketball at Brookhaven High School.
  • Justin Durr (top model for numerous magazines), born in Brookhaven in 1981 and lived there until the age of 15. He is currently one of the highest paid male models in the industry.

Amtrak, the national passenger rail system, provides service to Brookhaven. Amtrak Train 59, the southbound City of New Orleans, is scheduled to depart Brookhaven at 12:17pm daily with service to McComb, Hammond, and New Orleans. Amtrak Train 58, the northbound City of New Orleans, is scheduled to depart Brookhaven at 4:03pm daily with service to Hazlehurst, Jackson, Yazoo City, Greenwood, Memphis, Newbern-Dyersburg, Fulton, Carbondale, Centralia, Effingham, Mattoon, Champaign-Urbana, Kankakee, Homewood, and Chicago.
