Brodequin is a death metal band from Knoxville, Tennessee. Formed in 1998 by brothers Mike and Jamie Bailey, the band has released three full-length albums to date. The band's music is notable even amongst the scene for its overwhelming "wall of sound" production that makes for challenging listening. The key musical elements combine gurgling death metal vocals, almost continuous blastbeats, extremely fast drumming and memorable riffs.

[edit] The Band's Music

The name Brodequin was originally chosen by Jamie Bailey to sum up the group and their content. In Bailey's own words "The Brodequin was an instrument of torture designed to destroy the victim's legs by hammering wedges of wood or metal between the legs and boards tied tightly around them. In some cases the damage was so severe the marrow of the bones would flow freely from the wounds." The group's lyrical content holds close to their name, often referring to torture devices throughout time. Their lyrics are typical for the death metal scene overall, with the frequent references to death, dismemberment, torture, murder and sexual abuse that characterise the genre. The group would intend, however, to give far more of a historical basis for their lyrics than other death metal bands. Jamie Bailey is himself a History graduate, and most of his lyrics are based upon real historical events and implements.

The musical sound of the band can be differentiated from other bands in the genre by its sheer pace and relentlessness. The music features incessant use of blastbeats played at very high speed by a real drummer. When combined with unbroken guitar riffs and incomprehensible vocals, a "wall of sound" is often created for extended periods, that some fans of the genre can find difficult. The production and mixing of the music emphasizes this effect, leading to a very aggressive and somewhat distorted sound. Musically, the production and writing is very close to Liturgy, a side project involving Brodequin and Disgorge, meaning the sound is not totally unique. Jon Engman is also the drummer of Foetopsy, in which the speed of his playing and blastbeats is even faster, perhaps meaning Brodequin cannot be distinguished as the fastest and most difficult band within the genre.
