Brod is an old spelling for German word "das Brot" (bread).
In many Slavic languages brod means shallow place to cross a river. It could also mean boat (brod looks like Germanic words that had same meaning; German furt, English ford, Nordic fjord).
In Serbo-Croatian language, brod (Serbian: брод) means ship, boat.
Hungarian corresponding word is rév.
