Broccoli Man
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Broccoli Man is a cultural icon bent on getting everyone to eat their broccoli. He met President George W Bush and Governor Jesse Ventura to ask them how they felt about broccoli. He has been interviewed on radio stations across the United States and in New Zealand. He has also appeared on The Food Network and starred in an award-winning short film entitled, "The Inedible Bulk".
In an effort to reach the masses with his message, Broccoli Man is launching an election campaign for 2008. He is encouraging people to write-in their vote for Broccoli Man for President of the United States in 2008. Why waste your write-in vote on Mickey Mouse or Darth Vader?
[edit] Origin Story - Fiction
[as depicted in "The Inedible Bulk"] A broccoli farmer in Oregon, frustrated by the fact that his own children hate broccoli, invents an instant hybridization device that crosses broccoli with better-tasting plants. He accidentally activates the device while inside with some broccoli and becomes Broccoli Man - crusader against fatty, disgusting, unhealthy foods!
[edit] Origin Story - Reality
Broccoli Man was originally created for a chili cookoff. Substitute broccoli for beans in any chili recipe, and you have Broccoli Man's secret formula. He then created a song and dance number to go with the outfit, singing "Broccoli Man" to the tune of "Macho Man" by The Villiage People.
Fame didn't hit until he attended a protest in 2000. Getting wind of a "pro-choice" protest at a dinner for then Presindetial candidate George W Bush, Broccoli Man attended to support "pro choice of vegetables". The motivation for this was the fact that George Bush Senior made a big deal about hating broccoli and it had a profoundly negative affect on broccoli sales. Broccoli Man had to undo that damage! He got on the news several times and then when George W Bush came to town again, Broccoli Man attended the rally to personally ask the President-to-be how he felt about broccoli. His response? "I like the tops, but not the stalks".
