Brixworth
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brixworth is a large village and civil parish in the Daventry district of the county of Northamptonshire in England. In 2001 it had a population of 5,162.
The village is located around 5 miles (8km) north of Northampton next to the A508 road (it is now by-passed). Just east of the village is the large Pitsford Reservoir, and to the east is the Brampton Valley Way, and the Northampton & Lamport Railway. The village contains one of the oldest, largest and most complete Saxon churches in the country (All Saints' church, completed 680 A.D. described by many experts as "The finest Saxon church north of the Alps". - another local Saxon church being found at Earls Barton.
The area around Brixworth once had a large ironstone quarrying industry, and several industrial railways existed in the area to serve it. Today, the rural nature of Brixworth conceals world-class engineering: many Indianapolis and Grand Prix Formula 1 championships have been won with racing engines built barely 800 yards from the ancient Saxon church, part of whose tower masonry is held safe by an advanced steel tension bar designed and donated by ILMOR Engines. The ILMOR "factory" is environmentally clever: the intense noise and heat of the racing engines under test is filtered through enormous water tanks that (1) hush the racket, and (2) provide warmth to heat the factory!
Brixworth also includes a local football team; Brixworth Juniors Football Club, which encourages children of all ages throughout the community to get active and play sport.
