British Ice Hockey Cup

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The British Ice Hockey Cup (also known as the British Knockout Cup) is a knockout competition for British ice hockey clubs that are members of the Elite Ice Hockey League and clubs from other leagues that are invited to take part.

When the London Racers withdrew their team from the Elite League in November 2005, some of the remaining clubs were left with a shortfall in the number of games promised on their season tickets. A knockout tournament was quickly devised to allow clubs to fulfill their season ticket commitments.

When the Nottingham Panthers declined to take part, citing the lack of available ice time at the National Ice Centre, English Premier League side Hull Stingrays were invited and agreed to take part.

Elite League bosses are hopeful that should the new competition prove to be a success, the competition will be expanded in future seasons to include more teams from the EPL.

The format presently sees teams drawn to face each other randomly with teams then facing each other over two legs. The winner of the tie is the team who have the highest aggregate score at the end of the second leg.
