Brit Insurance Holdings plc (LSE: BRE) is a London-based general insurance and reinsurance group. It is a member of the London Stock Exchange and a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. Market capitalisation was over £850m as of mid-2005. Brit operates through its subsidiaries Brit Insurance Limited (which is licensed to write insurance throughout the European Economic Area) and Syndicate 2987 at Lloyd's of London. Gross premiums income now exceeds £1bn. Profits for 2005 were over £47m, lower than forecast due to adverse exposure to claims from Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita.
Brit supports Surrey County Cricket Club, including the Brit Oval at Kennington in London.
