The Brisbane Broncos' first ever match was played in Brisbane against the previous year's permiers, the Manly Sea Eagles and nobody expected the competition new-comers to beat the 1987 champions by a scoreline of 44-10. The Broncos won their first 6 matches in the 1988 season, but failed to make the finals.
