Brighton High School in Cottonwood Heights, Utah is located about ten miles south of Salt Lake City.

Brighton has proven consistent high averages in testing and currently holds national rankings for Dance and Volleyball. The school offers opportunities to receive college credit through Advanced Placement and concurrent enrollment programs, administered by Utah State University and Salt Lake Community College.

The school serves a suburban area extending across Sandy, Utah and Cottonwood Heights[3], and is part of the Jordan School District.

Brighton High has recently gained national recognition of the Dance Team "Accadians" and Girls Volleyball, ranking 1st and 9th, respectively. In addition, the Bengals have a strong tradition of state Swimming and Wrestling.

Brighton High has consistently scored in top percentiles in the ACT, SAT, and state testing. In addition to a wide variety of Advanced Placement courses taught, concurrent enrollment is available through Utah State University and Salt Lake Community College, earning direct college credit through distance learning programs. As part of the Jordan School District, many vocational studies are avalable through local Technology Centers, ranging from Heavy Diesel Mechanics to certification as a Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator. [edit] Utah State Testing (UPASS)

Mandated through Federal No Child Left Behind legislation, Utah adopted the Utah Performance Assessment for Students (UPASS) to prove academic proficiency. [31] The annual Brighton High report card has shown above average performance in Language Arts as well as Science areas.

Brighton's well-established community is an asset to the school. Residents are actively involved with the school and show strong support for Brighton High programs and activities.

  • Brighton High serves about 2,258[34] students in grades 10 to 12.
  • The school, which opened in 1969, is designed with two octagonal sections housing self-contained classrooms and a full auditorium. A gymnasium and support areas complete the building which is situated on the brow of a hill.
  • School is in session for 180 days a year on a traditional nine month calendar using a five-period tri-mester schedule. The school day begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 2:25 p.m.
  • The teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 27.3, but actual class sizes vary and are usually over 32 students.
  • A fully-qualified staff of counselors, psychologists, and itinerant speech and language specialists provides services to meet student needs. Hearing and vision programs are also provided.
  • A Parent/Teacher/Student Association attempts to addresses special school needs and strengthens programs through volunteer committee work.
  • The Brighton "Accadians" or drill/dance team, have won nationals on multiple occasions.
  • Brighton High has been State All Sports Champion on many occasions since 1980, annually winning state championships in several sports. Now they have one of the best volleyball teams in the nation.
  • The girl's varsity volleyball team won the state title in 2006.
