Brighton-Farmington Expressway
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Brighton-Farmington Expressway was a name given to a controlled-access Interstate standard freeway which is now known as Interstate 96 and M-5 east of I-275 and I-696. It starts and ends at Grand River Avenue in Brighton (present day Exit 145) and Farmington Hills respectively.
[edit] History
This individual segment of expressway was built as a response to the increasing traffic volumes on Grand River Avenue; known then as US-16. When the Jeffries Freeway was built toward Detroit, Interstate 96 was re-routed onto I-275 and the aforementioned Jeffries Freeway. After the rerouting of I-96, the portion east of I-275 was redesignated as M-102, and then M-5. The Brighton-Farmington Expressway has had lanes added to it over the years.
[edit] Traffic jams
During rush hour, this segment of freeway is severely congested on westbound.
[edit] Recent inprovements
In 2004, a new interchange was built at Beck Road; which was a response to increasing traffic volumes at the odd interchange that 12 mile road runs into. This new interchange is one of a few newly redisigned single point urban interchanchages(SPUI)in Michigan.
