[edit] Playing career

Welsh made his name at Tannadice with Dundee United, famously scoring last-minute equalisers in the Scottish Cup semi-final and Scottish First Division play-off final. In 1986, Welsh was part of the Scotland team who reached the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship, losing 1-0 to Italy. The following year, he reached the quarter-finals of the World Youth Championship, losing on penalties to West Germany.

Welsh became a regular in the United side in 1994 and after winning the Cup, experiencing relegation and subsequent promotion with United, left to join Hibernian in a £200k deal in 1996.

After signing for Cowdenbeath and retiring due to injury, Welsh coached at Central Park for four years prior to his appointment as manager. Welsh, who manages on a part-time basis, also runs a local taxi firm.[1]
