[edit] Plot summary

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Brian has come to dislike life in the city, and when he gets into a fight with a boy his age (he wins using an almost animal-like desire to keep the other boy down) he is caught by the police and sent to a counselor. The counselor is a blind, retired police officer who, after talking to Brian, realizes that there is nothing wrong with him except that he misses the wilderness. He suggests that Brain go back into the woods, and asks Brian to write letters to him that describe his experiences.

Brian decides to go visit the Smallhorns (a Cree trapping family who saved him in Brian's Winter). Brian gathers his bow, arrows, canoe and other things to take on his trip. He gets a ride from a pilot who is bringing some fishermen up near the Smallhorn's home. He gets dropped off at a river some miles away from the Smallhorns, and starts his trip there on his canoe. This is a great book!
