Breloom (キノガッサ? Kinogassa in original Japanese language versions) is a fictional species from the Pokémon franchise.
Breloom's name may be a portmanteau of umbrella and mushroom. Its Japanese name is likely a combination of 茸 (kinoko), mushrooms, and 傘 (kasa), umbrella.

[edit] Biological characteristics
Breloom is a bipedal, moderately sized, and relatively humanoid creature with stubby-looking arms consisting of red hooves, a green cap on its head resembling an umbrella-shaped toadstool (hence the Umbrella influence on its name), and a large tail with spherical seeds on its tip.
Breloom is a diurnal herbivore that lives in fields and forests, environments which feature plants and trees, commodities that have leaves for Breloom to feed on. Its favorite climate conditions are sunlight-induced warmth and humidity, which is when Breloom is at its most active. It is a Pokémon that does not often get targeted by predators due to its spore-laden anatomy and self-defending prowess (see below).
Breloom’s body is configured for battling opponents in a competitive boxing fashion. It appears to have underdeveloped arms, but these in fact are stretchable arms that Breloom extends to strike at its enemies after approaching them with its agile, nimble footwork. Breloom’s stretchy arms (compare with Hitmonlee's legs) are capable of extremely quick, rapid-fire punches that are virtually invisible, putting professional human boxers to shame (compare with Hitmonchan). As well as having toadstool and mushroom attributes, one could compare it's body structure and behavior to a kangaroo.
Another defining trait of Breloom is the array of potent spores adorning its body. Spores are located within Breloom’s toadstool cap, and Breloom sprays and scatters these spores out of the red holes on its cap as its tool to debilitate and poison its opponent. Also toxically sporous are the seeds on Breloom’s tail, which sometimes drop off and are grown back. These seeds let loose their sporous contents when Breloom thwacks an opponent with its tail, making the foe even more at risk of succumbing to poisoning. These seeds are horrid things to consume; a mere bite out of one of these seeds that may be lying around on the forest floor will cause the consumer’s stomach to rumble.
[edit] In the video games
Breloom have never been found in the wild. It can be evolved from Shroomish, which are found only in Petalburg Woods in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.
Breloom, as a Pokémon with knowledge of the move Spore, is compared to fellow Mushroom Pokémon Parasect for battle. Breloom’s statistics are just like Parasect’s, but with lowered special defense as a trade-off for a much-needed speed improvement and a very high Attack rating. This generally supports Breloom far better than Parasect’s peculiarities, thanks to its knowledge of Fighting and Grass attacks as well as the Poison-type move Sludge Bomb, making it a far more efficient frontal battler. Its Fighting-type attacks are hugely effective against the notoriously resilient Blissey.
But Breloom is most often used as a Spore/Focus Punch-oriented attacker. Focus Punch is a very powerful Fighting-type move that connects only if the opponent does not attack the user during the turn it is used. Spore makes the opponent fall asleep with near-perfect accuracy making it a good measure to take to ensure that Focus Punch will not be interrupted.
[edit] In the Pokémon anime
In the Pokémon anime Episode 358, A Shroomish Skirmish, Team Rocket angers a group of wild Shroomish when they steal their food. The Shroomish all evolve into Breloom, and the Pokémon proceed to chase the trio. Ash Ketchum's party gets involved, and the whole group is separated when the Breloom perform a group Mach Punch. May's Torchic evolves into a Combusken and fights the leader of the Breloom. Evenly matched, the two Pokémon eventually call a truce and peace is restored. Factory Head Noland happens to own a Breloom as one of his many Pokémon.
Breloom also had a small appearance in "Jirachi: Wishmaker" as one of the Pokémon fleeing from Fake Groudon.
In Pasta La Vista!, Kyle's Hitmonchan (loaned to May) was training against a Breloom.
[edit] In the Pokémon trading card game
Breloom has four cards printed under its name, and they are distributed in the following expansions:
- EX Ruby and Sapphire
- EX Sandstorm
- EX Deoxys (Fighting type)
- EX Emerald
All are uncommon cards. Breloom’s battle theme in the TCG is meant to blend grass with fighting qualities, so these cards feature strong attacks that either require or are supported by Fighting energy cards.
