Breeding Stock Paint
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Breeding Stock Paint is a horse that is solid in coloration, but was born out of two paint horses.
To qualify as a paint horse, a horse must have a spot on it measuring at least two inches in any direction and the underlying skin must be pink. Scars, and pink skin on the private areas do not count. A horse can still be a paint, though it has no spots. If the markings on the face go past the eye, or if the markings on the legs go above the knees (on the forelegs) or above the hocks (backlegs), then it could qualify the horse as a paint.
Breeding Stock Paint horses can still be registered as Paint Horses, but will not have a regular registration. They won't be able to participate in most Paint Horse classes at the Association shows. Typically there are three or four classes for Breeding Stock Paint horses to participate in at the Paint Shows.
If bred to another paint horse, a Breeding Stock can still produce a colored baby. Although they don't show it, they still carry the paint gene.
Breeding Stock Paint horses are just like a quarter horse, i have one, or a thoroughbred. They are useful, multitalented, and can do nearly anything (Show Jumping, Dressage, Barrel Racing, Trail Riding, Cattle work, etc.) Often, Breeding Stock Paints are more affordable than other types of horses because they do not have the color on them that the breeder desired. As with some paint horses, Breeding Stock's have the potential to carry the HYPP and Lethal White genes. If you plan on breeding them it is recommended that you get them tested before hand.
Breeding Stock Paints can sometimes showcase small paint traits. Such traits include Blue Eyes, Pink lips, "wall eyes", roan spots, and minimal roaning. See the picture to the right for an example.
There is only one way you can know for certain that your horse is a Breeding Stock Paint, and that's if you know that both the mother and the father were registered paint horses. If only one parent was a registered paint, the baby is not a Breeding Stock Paint.
