In 2006, tragedy struck when Pine Island had to be euthanized after breaking her left front ankle, exposing bone and thereby becoming prone to serious infection. This was the first time in a Breeders' Cup event since Funfair in 2005 that a horse was so severely injured it had to be put down. A second horse, Fleet Indian, also broke down in unrelated circumstances in the same race, but her ligament injury was much less severe. She was retired from racing and will survive as a broodmare. Ironically, Pine Island and Fleet Indian were joint favorites to win the 2006 Distaff.
