The Brearley School is an all-girls' private school in New York City, USA. It is located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and is a member of the Interschool. The school is divided into the Lower School (K-4), Middle School (5-8) and Upper School (9-12). There is a total of approximately 750 students enrolled in grades K-12, with about fifty students in a class.
Founded in 1884 by Samuel Brearley, the school is still, despite its relative youth, considered the sister school of The Collegiate School, the oldest educational institution in North America. The Brearley School has moved three times during its history and is currently located in a twelve-story building on East 83rd street in Manhattan, overlooking the East River.
Brearley's mascot is the beaver, and its motto is "By Truth and Toil."
Brearley's current headmistress (appointed in 2003) is Stephanie Hull.

[edit] Academics
Academically, Brearley has a reputation for being one of the most challenging schools in the nation. The curriculum is based on the study of the liberal arts, and is designed to give students a solid background in all disciplines. The English and History departments are especially strong: they focus on the development of writing skills (in Middle School) and analysis (in Upper School). All students are required to study at least one language, and most take two. Languages currently taught are Spanish, French, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, and Greek. In the fall of 2004, the school piloted a new program that incorporated the use of iPods in language classes, allowing students to download portable audio lessons. The Brearley School also places considerable emphasis on music, art, and drama.
"Within a highly articulated 13-year curriculum, and with a 7:1 student-faculty ratio, teaching methods are varied, flexible and pragmatic, taking into account individual patterns of development and ways of learning. [Their] program is designed to challenge [their]eager, able students intellectually, and to give each one the opportunity to gain competence, self-reliance and self-knowledge through academic achievement as well as experience in the visual and performing arts, sports, community service and a wide variety of extracurricular activities." [edit] Sports facilities
A separate building, the "Field House" on East 87th Street, has facilities for physical education and athletics including track, soccer, basketball, tennis, badminton, volleyball, swimming, gymnastics, cross country, squash, lacrosse and field hockey. In 2005, both Varsity Volleyball and Varsity Cross Country won State Championships. Brearley's Varsity Cross Country team won the New York State Championship again in the fall of 2006.
